National Mourning period

We have created this page to provide updates and information about Bristol’s period of mourning and how this may affect you and your business.

09/09/2022

Alongside our colleagues at Broadmead BID and Redcliffe & Temple BID, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our thoughts are with the Royal Family. We pay tribute to Her Majesty’s lifelong service and dedication to the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth as the longest reigning monarch in history.

We have created this page to provide updates and information about Bristol’s period of mourning and how this may affect you and your business.

Upcoming changes

  • Flags

City Hall’s Union and St George’s flags alongside others at civic buildings across the city will be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect. If your building has a flag, you may consider lowering it to half-mast.

  • City Hall

City Hall will be lit up purple in memory of Her Majesty until the State Funeral.

  • Tributes

Anyone wishing to lay floral tributes in memory of The Queen are asked that you lay them at the West End of Bristol Cathedral. Books of condolence will also be available at City Hall and Bristol Cathedral alongside a Bristol e-book, and a national e-book of condolence.

ROAD CLOSURES

Bristol’s Proclamation Day will take place in front of the fountains on College Green, at a date to be confirmed. This will cause some localised disruption with road closures.

CANCELLATIONS

There is no instruction or obligation for anything to be cancelled, or for businesses to close during the National Mourning period. Depending on the nature and location of your business and the tone of planned events, some businesses may wish to consider closing or postponing events, especially on the day of the State Funeral, however they are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations.

If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

National Moment of Reflection

A National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September to mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and reflect on her life and legacy.

The public are invited to take part in a minute’s silence to mark this Moment of Reflection.

The silence can be marked privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps or thestreet with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils.
