Bristol BIDs and Veolia renew partnership to continue to drive city’s sustainability forward

Bristol City Centre Business Improvement District (BID) and Redcliffe & Temple BID have announced the renewal of their three-year contract with Veolia, the UK’s leading resource management company.

This collaboration, originally launched in 2018, has made significant strides in enhancing sustainability across Bristol, doubling recycling rates from 34% in 2019 to an impressive 64% in 2024.

This renewed partnership builds on years of success, with over 300 BID members benefiting from the programme’s eco-friendly waste management services, including general waste, dry mixed recycling and growing waste streams like coffee cups and disposable vapes. In 2023 alone, Veolia collected and recycled over 174 tonnes of materials, playing a key role in Bristol’s transition to a greener future.

With sustainability a priority for businesses in the area, the partnership’s value extends beyond environmental impact. BID members utilising Veolia’s services have enjoyed significant cost savings, with waste management costs falling by an average of 40%. Additionally, the programme has reduced vehicle movement in the city centre, easing congestion and improving air quality.

Consultations on the creation of a new Bristol BID, to unite the existing Districts and expand the area, will widen the benefits of the Veolia partnership to more businesses in 2025, pending the vote due next June.

Tom Swithinbank, Senior Project Manager at Bristol City Centre BID and Redcliffe & Temple BID, said:

“Continuing our work with Veolia is integral to Bristol’s sustainability goals. By collaborating with a partner that shares our commitment to reducing our impact on the environment, we’re ensuring that businesses across the city are contributing to a better, greener Bristol.”

Veolia’s Managing Director - Commercial, Adam Wylie, added:

“We are proud to support Bristol’s thriving business community in its efforts to reduce environmental impacts. This partnership not only helps businesses achieve their sustainability goals but also aligns with Veolia’s mission to promote ecological transformation across the UK.”

The ongoing success of the Veolia partnership complements the wider climate action efforts led by Bristol’s BIDs in collaboration with the Bristol Climate and Nature Partnership and Bristol Good Food Network. Through initiatives like climate action breakfasts, sustainability clinics and networking events, the BIDs are encouraging businesses to embrace eco-friendly practices and create lasting change. Notably, local firms like Womble Bond Dickinson and National Friendly have reported tangible benefits from engaging in these programmes, with one firm reducing its carbon footprint by 54%.

Looking ahead, the partnership will continue to innovate with new services, providing BID members with sustainable waste solutions at competitive rates while helping Bristol businesses lead the way in environmental responsibility.
