Festive programme

Bristol City Centre BID’s festive programme aims to give Bristol added appeal as a Christmas destination.

Bristol City Centre BID’s festive programme aims to give Bristol added appeal as a Christmas destination and encourage people to spend more time here.

The seasonal spectacle starts in mid-November with the Christmas lights switch-on, making King Street, Park Street, Queen’s Road, the Old City and the Centre Promenade twinkle beneath more than a mile of festoon lighting featuring 25,500 LEDS.

In 2018, Bristol City Centre BID also commissioned a month-long interactive light art installation on College Green, film-effect snowfall on Millennium Promenade and the Old City, and a specially curated light show on Corn Street to celebrate 275 years of Bristol’s famous St Nicholas Market.

It makes Bristol a more desirable choice among the growing numbers of people planning a festive short break: VisitEngland research showed that 13 million Brits (26%) planned to take an overnight UK trip over the Christmas and New Year period in 2018/19, boosting the economy by an estimated £2.6billion.

Christmas is a time of year when shoppers want more than just shopping. They’re looking to share experiences, create memories and build a sense of excitement. Our festive programme helps do exactly that.

Spreading joy through the city centre

The Christmas lights have been switched on, lighting up the city centre streets for the third year running.

Funded solely by Bristol City Centre BID, 25,500 LEDs are now sparkling over King Street, Welsh Back, Corn Street, Park Street, Queens Road and College Green.

We’re encouraging people to take their daily exercise through the city centre, and whilst exploring the lights, to spread some joy by supporting local businesses that are open and operating safely.

A big thank you to SparkX and Bristol City Council – without them, this would not have been possible.

We're funding the Christmas lights for the third year

We will be continuing to fund the Christmas lights this year with the switch-on taking place on Friday 13th of November.

For the festive period, over a mile of festoon lighting featuring 25,500 LEDs will cover Park Street, Queen’s Road, King Street, Corn Street, Welsh Back and College Green.

The Christmas lights aim to light up Bristol in the cold and dark winter months as well as encouraging people to safely spend more time here.

City centre Christmas lights are better than ever

Bristol city centre’s Christmas lights were switched on this week, marking the start of the festive season. Funded and organised by City Centre BID, the lights are more extensive than ever thanks to the addition of King Street, home to the world-famous Bristol Old Vic theatre.
The UK-manufactured light displays feature the latest in low energy technology, minimising the impact on the environment and keeping energy costs as low as possible.
